Thousands of Venezuelans had sloshed through the river this week in the lead-up to the expiration of pandemic-era U.S. border policies, ignoring entreaties by Mexican authorities and stern warnings from U.S. agents. But on Friday, the riverbanks were mostly calm, as isolated clusters of migrants from different nations sat on the Mexican side gazing forlornly across to the United States.
